Anyone have oscar fish? Here is my oldest baby Selvester.. he lets us pet him
.
I named him that because he broke his jaw, see..
.
The other day, this Lutiano red was spawning, I was sooo excited ( I have been waiting for a long time ) and when I looked again the other ones in there were eating them , and no one was fertilizing them
I was told they spawn before they are mature enough, and that's what happens
I have a lot of oscars, 6 in total, among other cichlids. Like Mowgli, An elecitri blue jack dempsey. They are hard to find and expansive.
They are not colour died, it's a recessive gene, thus why I had to pay 49.00 for a fish that was only3/4 of an inch long

That first one has a cute face. They are really pretty. I have always admired them but never able to do well with even just plain old gold fish.

Well, goldfish can be a tough thing....every one I ever had died
The lfs told me that they are harder to keep now due to mass breeding, they carry a lot of disease.
Ever since I switched to cichlids I haven't really had a problem
The ones I have are from the central/south america region, I find them to be quite hardy....except for the blue dempsey, they are noted for being prone to parasites.....I'm just giving him a whirl, see if I can keep him going

Izzy what size tank do you have? You would love to work where I work if you like fish [Hagen Distribution Center Edmonton]. Only thing is there are no horse, goat related merchandise sold threw there. I tried the fish thing but as with Joyce they just die within a couple weeks.

On our honeymoon in B.C. forty yrs. ago ... we found the rust colored salamanders with orange undersides. Brought seven of them home with
us. We needed a fish tank for them.. Before long we had fish tanks everywhere. Had Oscars and every other type fish over the years except salt water fish..Since then we have had just about every allowable creature and some that weren't except snakes..Think we went through the fish thing about four times now.. Got rid of the last big tanks about eight years ago.
You have found your home with a group of creature lovers.. LOL

A long time ago I took care of a neighbor's Oscar fish while he went to boot camp. that fish ate EVERYTHING! I'd give hims earthworms, and dirt bugs ( Pill bugs, or potato bugs to you Southern Gals . ), and he'd scarf 'em right down. He was the neatest fish. He was so tame! :o)
The Electric Blue one is absolutely stunning!

Thanks for all the nice comments everyone Pat,....if I worked where you work, I'd be in a lot of trouble The pet stores here like to see me walk in the door. Right now I'm running a Hagen 108 gallon and a 70 gallon. I need to up size my tanks, and am looking for something around 8' long for my living room. How big of tanks do you see where you work?
Do they make a 300 gallon tank?
Later this year we plan on adding a bigger living room to our home. We are drawing up the plans for a 5000 gallon tank. Gonna be a lot of fun. We priced out the plexiglass to be 825.00 a piece. We need 2 4x8' pieces 1" thick. The rest is going to be made out of reinforced concrete. It's taking a lot of planning, but I think it's going to be a blast!
We are starting it in the summer, as this spring we are doing our fencing and barn building. We have most of the material already....just waiting for the snow to melt. Cant wait to bring Coors home.

Thanks. The 108 I'm running right now I picked up for a smoking deal! I wanted to bring home another oscar, but didn't have the room. I was telling the girl there that I wished I had a tank like that one. She said "oh really?, that one is for sale" 125.00 ! I couldn't belive it, and it was only 6 monthes old, and it's a hagen too! I walked out of the store a very happy girl that day!

Izzy, I asked at work and was told Hagen doesn't carry the big big tanks the biggest is maybe 180 gal. . Getting into the fancy bow fronts, corner, seam less, open tops, complete with stands and very over priced I think. Maybe because I am not a fish person, at least to own fish. Love the looks of the set-up at someone else's place though.

Thanks for the info
Later on this spring we are taking down some trees to open up a wetter area of our property, there is too much moisture there from small springs... the ground is clay, and it's the dark side of the moon over there. I want to take out all the wood that's prone to pine bettle and hemloc looper. I will be planting other water loving varieties of trees to take their place. The trees in this area are really starting to be affected by these bugs This is going to help us pay for the the addition and the new aquarium.
They will be lovin their new home when they get in there

Talking about big fish tanks and fish, today a customer called and wanted to know about what and if her Fluval was repairable that she sent in. She is 75 yrs. young and owns a 100 gal. tank whoa! She sent in her Fluval filter and it is at least ten yrs. old and clean clean. Can't fix it but I asked my boss if it was okay to send her a new the latest model. Never had this good of a customer to deal with, she was so nice to deal with. And besides she lives in Portage La Prarie, Manitoba the town I grew up in.

Wow!!! Glad you're able to help her with that. I can't even keep my gold fish going.
Keeping the tank clean seemed like a pain, so hubby told me to throw them out in the pond. He said they would grow bigger and love it. Have not seen them since. I didn't know there were wide mouth bass in there either. I must have been Dazed and Confused at the time for actually listening to him

Yeah a lot of people out here seem to put Gold fish in their ponds to keep the Mosqito larva/eggs from hatching. I put Mozola Cooking oil in to our pond much easier.

Does the cooking oil work?? Does it take a lot of oil?

My farrier girl I use to have told me about the oil in the pond because it would not harm the horses to drink or if they went in the pond. The mosqito's seem to get smothered by it and can't hatch. I only had a smaller dug out so all we used was a litre jug. Seemed to work but then the mosqito's at my old place were not to bad, we also had a family of wild ducks living in it.

yea, I have herd of that too.
I brought home a little 3/4" oscarling the other day. He was a loner in with 4" africans He was sooo chewed up, just looking at me like "please save me", I couldn't help but bring him home. I wasn't sure if he was going to make it, but I thought it was worth a try. The kids named him Gimpy, as he was so ripped up So far he's looking like he might make it. He is in a 20 gallon quarantine tank, it won't last him forever, so I guess I'll be looking for another tank for him. Time to go shopping
