FounderI'm just wondering exactly how that works..what can cause it, and what happens internally, and what are the signs?
Don't worry...the horses are fine, I'm just wondering

Oh mercy! If we could answer that one, we'd be billionaires!
But at the risk of oversimplifying, I will open the topic up by saying it is often caused by diet (particularly high sugar grass/hay). Or too much grain. Every horse's body is different, so what one will tolerate will send another down laminitis lane. Fat horses are more prone to it.
Another early symptom is a tall hard crest shaped neck.
A really dangerous symptom is hot hooves and the horse standing in a position that looks like he's avoiding the front feet.
I'll everyone else chime in and work on this one.

Hot hooves are scary. There's a thing called "road founder", too, if a horse is worked too hard and too long on paved roads. There's always a need for concern when a horse founders so badly that the coffin bone rotates. I don't really understand just how that phenominon happens. I Googled it once, read the article, and still was confused. But then, I'm not very bright sometimes .........

It's when the bone rotates downward and in the worst possible case it actually protrudes out of the bottom of the foot. The connections between the bone and the outer structures of the hoof are damaged by the condition. It's awful. There was someone on the this group who had that happen to a mini once. I felt so sorry for her when she had the horse put down. It's also tremendously painful for the horse. Founder is best avoided if at all possible because it's hard to treat.

There are many different kinds of founder..2 most known is chronic and acute..it has a lot to do with the horses ability to process carbs (sugar)
imagine a horse that wears high heels..it hurts horrid
