Horse bathing reportWell, we really haven't done an official bath yet.
I started with Moriah the other day and just sprayed her with the hose. At first she ran circles around me and we got the hose and lead rope remarkably tangled up. I'd spray for 10 seconds and then stop for 10 seconds and repeat. It took about a minute and it dawned on her that it actually felt pretty good! Then she stood pretty well and I managed to get most of her wet and some of the dirt washed away, but nothing thorough. Then we went out and grazed while she dried off. When we went back I was curious to see if she'd immediately roll in the dirt, but she didn't! And the next morning, she still was pretty clean! I was also curious if she'd be afraid of the hose, but no, she wasn't. I turned it on to fill the tank and she acted just like she always has when I fill up the water. No problem.
Today I rinsed Aslan off and grazed him and then decided to do Shiloh. She was amazing. At first she backed up to try to get away from the spray, but after 10 seconds she just stood there as if she kind of liked it. I guess it felt like rain. I didn't graze her long enough to get thoroughly dry and that was a mistake. She DID go and roll in the dust and ended up far dirtier than when we started. A thick layer of mud all over her. Nice job Shloh. I guess it'll dry up and blow off overnight and maybe tomorrow we'll try again!
I felt like that was all pretty good for the first time and maybe next time we'll add a little soap and rinse to the process.

LOL sounds about normal.
I actually find that the first time or 2 i take the spray end off the hose. Not so spooky for them. But some love it and some take a while. Good not to soap them up until they are used to it because you will want to be sure you get all the soap off. I have ended up using an empty coffee can and rinsing some spots off with just pouring the water over some of them. Also i don't know what you plan to do but when i showed horses and bathed them i used baby shampoo on their heads as it was less likely to irritate the eyes. Just a thought.

What used to bug Lady was the fact that even when I let the hose sit out in the Sun, the water would eventually get colder and colder ( we have a well ), and then she'd begin to dance around. We bought one of those Oster water heaters that you hook up to the hose, but the warm water doesn't last all that long, even on a little Mini! So she'd end up getting a cold rinse eventually. I always thought it would be kinda neat to have a hot water heater that I could hook a hose up to.

It's been hot enoughh here that the horses have been just trying to stay in the shade. I go out to spray water up into the air to cool them off. Dixie loves it , Coors likes to play hard to get...but it's all part of the summer fun...kinda like a water fight..you know, like he's thinking... you think I'm gonna get wet, well I'm not going to be alone on that one !
They are much more relaxed after a nice cool down.
