Horse peeve.

Colt..every foal is a colt..drives me bunkers..female colt?? What the heck is a female colt.. Most locals say this One around here..your neck of the woods??
McBunz

No filly colts around here that I know of..
Six

I hear ya but I get "how are all your little colts doing" "uhhhh you mean my mares filly & gelding" I correct them

Yep that drives me nuts too. Seems so simple. Filly or a Colt. I don't understand it either. But the old timers, older then me , are the ones i catch doing that around here. You say foal and they think you are speaking a foreign language.

Well I sure was confused when I came to buy ONE little horse. I was looking for a female and came away with two males! I probably just didn't know the terminology...

So you are saying a colt is a male, Filly is the female. A yearling is either male or female but under a year old ?? Do I have that right ??
What are they called over a year old? My boys are over a year now and I know they are not Mares or Geldings

K Joyce..
Unbreeding male- COLT
Unbreeding female- filly
Over One year..(goes by Jan.1st.) Yearling filly or colt
breeding male-stallion
breeding female -mare
Mare without offspring- Maiden Mare

Ok C but hubby reminded me that I do have a Colt / Filly and you saw the proof complete with cattle tag earrings and hat.
Hopefully it's just a phase

A lot of the Old Timers around here call everything a "he", even if it's a "she". That really bugs me!

Hey Joyce! Maybe your colt / filly with the cattle tag earrings will write novels like Truman Capote did. Then you can live off the royalties!

Or make "it" play the Piano like Liberace..
McBunz

Or a movie star like Hudson.

Yep most of the ranchers around here in the west say colt for both. They talk about a "colt crop" but most of the ones I know are such nice down to earth hard working guys I really don't let it bother me.
I just look at it as a cultural coloquialism that goes with their lifestyle and the way they were taught.
