Yes..I am curious too...
I got a colt last fall and he had a dry hacky cough, runny nose off and on ALL WINTER...Vet gave me 2 kinds of antibiotics at different intervals and it just kept hanging on...
He finally stopped the coughing...but I know how worrisome this thing can be...hoping to hear GOOD news!!

We had a bad cough a few years ago..ONLY way I could nip it was shots..
We had a Pen/Gen shot for 7 days..these where foals and they got a dose for a 700lbs horse!
It worked..also you can always do a nasal swap and have it tested..Naxel is great for anything lung/airway!

Well Zoey has the runny nose now as well. So dispite what the seller said about her horses and her friend's horses not getting sick after being around him, didin't go so well for Zoey.
Both are still running around, eating, drinking, pooping, peeing, etc. You would never know that something was wrong, unless you are out there wth them and watch him sneeze/cough, or the snot coming from his nose. I have to take their temps, but I need someone out there to help me, and my husband worked late yesterday.
So as long as they continue being horses, I guess thats all I can hope for. The vet can't come out until July 19th. Another vet told me that they could try to fit me in within the next few days, if they have fevers.
One lady at the vets suggested giving them Equi-tussin...a cough syrup. Has anyone else used this?

Yes i have given horses cough syrup. Not sure what the brand name was but i got it at our farm store. Well that is the pits you can't get a vet to come look at them. Maybe something like what is called shipping fever. Something they get when shipped from 1 farm to another and mostly caused by stress the nearest i can figure. Hopefully you can get someone to help you take them temps. My vet told me to go get a childs digital thermometer (sp?) and use that. I just tie the horse up and hold it in there, don't loose it in there.
What color is the snot? white or yellow? Yellow stuff i would worry more about. Not the best way to start out your Mini adventure. Sorry you have this problem.

Here is a link about shipping fever. BUT those doses are for saddle horses and the bute they speak of should be banamine for Minis. Mostly posting this for some reference for you.

AND: i need to ask if they have been properly wormed. Sometimes a nasal discharge and cough can be from an overload of worms. I know it isn't wise to overstress an already stressed hrose but have you considered doing a 5 day worming purge? If you have already done this please disregard this answer as i am not sure since i haven't really kept up to date. Just throwing out some things that come to mind.
Any thoughts gals?

Hi all, just took the temps and Gideon's was 100.1, and Zoey's was 99.4 with about 5 seconds left to go (she moved and knocked it out ). Do those sound ok?
As far as I know, Zoey is current on her worming. I think she got Ivermectin last week. As for Gideon, since he came from an auction, I don't know anything about his past. I think Jennifer said that her friend gave him safeguard on Thursday (due to the lice), as they didn't want a worm killing overload. Would it be safe to start him on a five day course of safeguard again? I don't worry about stressing him out, because that boy eats! and if I put the wormer right there in his food, I am sure that he'll eat it right up. If I had to squirt it in his mouth, he might stress as he is still quite headshy.
I wish they were both as healthy as could be. Jennifer says that she believes it was shipping fever or a cold. Maybe since I am learning all this now, the rest of the journey will be a lot less stressful...getting the bad out of the way first.
The boogies are a thick whitish color. Possible light greenish. Not yellow or green green. Hard to explain, I wish I could take pics and post them! I haven't heard him cough today yet, so maybe that is going away? Wishful thinking!

Well first off I would be HIGHLY mad if my vet told me to wait 5 weeks..try some redcell to boost their immune system..
|
KanoasDestiny

What is redcell? I had a forum member contact me who used to work for a hometherapudic vet (something like that, the ones that try herbs rather than pills), and she recommended using garlic and echinacea. Has anyone ever tried one of those?

I'd keep calling the Vet with all of these questions until he or she gets tired of hearing from you and comes out there in person to help you out. It's ridiculous that you can't get someone out there immediately!

I've used the garlic and echinacea for people. It is good for colds and helps build the immune system. Garlic & golden seal is an alternative to
antibiotics (sp?) But don't know if it works the same for horse. Red Cell is good. I gave that to mine when he had a cough and runny nose. I am still giving it to them both daily. I give it to everyone out there now. The bottle says daily, but I'm not sure.

I wish I could find a homeopathic vet in my area!!

JOYCE..be careful with daily redcell you gonna give these boys
hemochromatosis..look it up!
|
Joyce

Ok looked it up. But I couldn't find anywhere that red cell causes it??
I don't give a full does, less than 1/2 mixed in feed and split 4 ways 4 animals. Why does the bottle say daily. Full amount for working horse and half that for playing or lazy like mine. How about once a week?? or every other day? Or what?
|
littlestep
|
I give ONCE a week..IF I where to sell redcell I would tell ya 4x a day!!
Redcell is a iron supplement enriched with vitamins

Ha GOOD POINT! OK Once a week, but when they get sick then up it to daily right? until they improve? Huh Dr Chambers

YEAH..and don't you forget it!!
