Starving animalsI sure have a heck of a time understanding how people can let animals go without food. If i was ever in a situation where something happened that i all of a sudden was penniless and could not afford to feed my animals i would know a lot of places to turn for help. Hard for me to understand when someone in that position doesn't seek help.
Even if the person doesn't have "friends" available there are still options, simply notifying a Vet would get you some action don't you agree?
Friends, neighbors, Vets, sheriff, sale barns could even put you in touch with someone that could help i bet. If you were ill and in the hospital unless you were completely out of it a person would think of their animals wouldn't they? Man i sure would.

I think there must have been some form of mental illness going on there
Betty..and maybe toxic poisoning of the horses with all that garbage. Maybe they were drinking water from those empty chemical pails and barrels.. I just can't see letting those horses live in what looked like a garbage dump..
Guess we have to wait and see.

Yes you may be on to something there. I hope the man gets some help and care also. Too bad.

Did I miss something on the news? I know I am always falling asleep on the couch and missing what is on the TV. This sounds real bad. I could not see myself not feeding all my critters or I am sure I would let them all go live somewhere else.

On the news one owner who was starving her horses said she couldn't sell them because they belong to her daughter who is away at school. She is taking care of them for her Then she said quote " Well times are hard right now" I just don't get it. If you can't afford to feed them then sell them or give them to someone who will. You don't just let them starve and say times are hard
At the Nashville fair we went to over the weekend. There was this huge draft horse who had been worked out in the heat for the show. Don't know what it's called but they pull something around and around in a circle. The owner was selling sorgum, or honey products. The horse was put in a pin on a real short rope long enough to just barely reach the ground to eat some hay. His water was outside his pin just out of his reach. The bowl was less than half full. He was trying to scratch but could not reach because of the equiptment and rope, and the flies were biting.
I wanted to pet him but could tell he was miserable. I pushed the water under the fence and he drank it down in to seconds.
To put it short later the horse still had no water. Paul asked the guy nicely if we could put some more water in the bowl for him. The guy was rude and said " NO, he's fine!"
The hose was right there, I wanted to spray the guy with it but they held me back.
I don't know for sure, but is there ever a reason to with hold water?
Now I wish I would have just watered him and not asked. What are they gonna do ...

Welll actually you NOT suppost to water horses immidiatly after work..you suppost to let them cool down..otherwise they can colic on you.

Well is seven hours long enough to cool down? The other horse was watered right away ?? This one never had any water in his bowl other then the one I put in.
Oh hubby says this one isn't the one who was working Didn't know that. Still it was hot out there and really short rope on him the whole time.

I never take water away from my guys. They run around playing with the dogs and each other. They drink when they want. Didn't know that can't drink after that.

A rescue group is just waiting for permission to go in and take these horses out...In Kansas....I believe... between 80 and 125 horses...They have received feed and water today... From what I read the breeder was a reputable breeder not that long ago.... a couple of yrs ago.. Something has gone terribly wrong..

I've heard that this is a myth.
You can let them drink at any time.
Doesn't cause colic.
Water is ok.
Another myth is that you shouldn't let them drink cold water.
Temperature also doesn't matter. Let them drink.

You know, I've been following this story since it appeared on the other forum. The horses look horrible, but for some reason, I get the impression that they aren't starving. From personal experience...Zoey and Gideon eat three times a day, and they swear up and down that I am starving them. They wait by the fence line for any shred of leaf or plant that blows into their pen. There is absolutely NO greenary to be seen, where they are within reach. I've even seen Gideon go up on his hind legs, to grab branches off the tree that canopies over them.
Unless something is seriously wrong with the green plants in the background in those pictures, I would assume that starved horses would have devoured them within minutes. Maybe it's like someone else said on the other forum...no matter how much you feed a horse, if it has an over abundance of worms, it will continue to lose weight? Or maybe they have something wrong with their teeth? Whatever the cause, the man should have worked hard to find the underlying problem, and you're right, there is absolutely no reason that you can't find someone to help if you don't have the means of providing for your animals. What gets me is he has 80-150 horses and they are STILL breeding!

This is not a myth. A horse should never be allowed to drink its fill of water after working hard or being riden hard. They will colic. Many years ago hubby had 1 colic on a trail ride from drinking the cold water out of a spring. Several horses on the ride did also. Vet said the horses were too hot and the water was too cold. Just trouble waiting for the invite. Nothing that brings this truth home more then having to spend most of the night walking a horse. Might be different from a blockage colic but the same painful procedure.
Of course this is more related to heat stress of the horse.

I heard they will founder too if worked hard and drink a lot of cold water.. Stiffen up like a board... Can't vouch for that as I never worked any horse hard enough to work up a good sweat... my style was trot and walk.. more walking that trotting... only one run away where the horse actually ran full out for about half a mile... Lost a sturp and a rein... so all I could do is hang on for dear life as she ran into the ditch, over logs and back onto the road
and back into the ditch..Fastest that horse ever moved in the twenty some yrs. I had her...

This is so true and not only will it cause colic but can cause water founder as well. Just try drinking your fill of water when you are over heated and see how you feel, not fun. I helped a fellow back when I was a teen, that was treating a mare that had water founder, not a pretty sight at all, some town kids took her from her paddock and rode her all afternoon and then let her drink when they were through, she was very hot. One more thing I want to caution you about too, never let a foal suck a hot mother, always cool her out first then let the foal nurse, if you don't you will have a very sick baby on your hands.

Just for the record, the fact that water (hot or cold) is safe for a heated horse comes not from hearsay but from reputable equine vets. Here is one link on the net supporting that:

Watch it..watch it..climbing on my soapbox!!
Okay..I believe the key is the AMOUNT of water..I don't believe a few sips will send a horse into colic..on the other side if you let your horse drink like an ox..different story!
When Heide years ago had an episode of Hyperglycemia..first thing Doctor Hold asked was ..did she drink cold water after working?
Sooo I believe like any thing caution, watch your horse and Moderation!!
Jumping off now!!

Times have changed and very few horses are worked, as our Draft horses are, and very few are tired out on a long trail rides in the hot summer months like they used to be. So maybe that is the differing opinions on this subject. Differing uses and different terms of over heated and hot.
Best advise it to be careful and care for your horses in your situations as best you can. Guess we sort of hijacked this thread. Sorry about that.

Good article Patty! I like the new version better. Seems more natural. I suppose just like with us, we can get sick if we drink ICE water after working out ... but I don't work out .... just drink the ice water LOL no problem
