Trailering...PAY ATTENTION, check your hook-up!! I just got an e-mail today from one of my "babies" Mom. Thankfully she is still alive yet, and hopefully will make it through this terrible ordeal.
| Quote: | | I told you I would keep you updated on April...I decided to have her rebred...had her hauled by the owner of the stallion...there for three weeks...way home, but they ran into a bit of a mishap...trailer never had the safety chains on and the trailer let go from the truck...April and the trailer ended up in the ditch...rushed into the Vet collage...no internal bleeding...x-rays they took confirmed she had a crack in her scapula...put her down.....or not...advised me that if it was her horse, she would try saving her. So that's what I did...stall confinement...couple of months, I'm told...any improvement within four weeks and will know then if she is going to make it for sure...never lost her appetite! She started to lay down for a bit today....I called the vet and they said this was a good sign...sleeping in the barn with her, so I don't miss anything that's happening...She is a real little trooper, the sweetest little thing you could ever ask for, and she has the whole community here rooting for her...I don't care if all she is able to do afterward is wander around the yard eating grass.....as long as she has minimum pain. |

OMG that is terrible... poor little mare... Hope she will be okay..
Hope the stud owner is paying the vet bills after not checking those chains.

Oh Sue that is a shame. Hate to hear that news.
Hope your girl recovers for you. Things happen when people get in a hurry. No excuse but i bet that person driving feels terrible too.

Oh what a terrible story. Sue do you know if this was a gooseneck trailer? Or a hitch?

Please keep us up to date on her progress and prayers go out to both of you from us here.

Sorry to take so long to answer...just got home.
It was a regular two-horse hitch trailer. I know the driver as well, and she is just devistated...as you can well imagine.
April has been walking around a lot more in her stall, which is a great sign. They don't know what to do about the foal, if there is one started...whether it will be too hard on her to carry it, or whether to give her a shot to make her slip it, and let her body concentrate on repairing itself. Foals take a lot of calcium from a mare's body...and she will need all she can get to heal that large a bone.

Gosh, Sue! What a thing to have happen! Your little girl just goes to show what recuperative powers our little Minis have! Look at what happened to C's Trooper! Prayers for you and April. As you say, it doesn't matter what she can do after she heals, as long as she's still with us! Keep us posted on the foal.

OMG Sue..soooo sorrrryyy..
Was it the chain chain that was not attached?? In the US it is law to have the trailer break box now..if you loose the trailer it will break..does not mean it would not end up in the ditch.. darn..we usually run both chains..prayers coming for a speedy recovery..these minis surprise you..tell the wee mare to "fight it"

Hey Sue .............. if April did catch, could you do an embryo transfer to another mare and still save the foal? Just a thought ..................

April doesn't live near here anymore...she lives in another Provence...Prince Edward Island. Wish I were closer! I just got an e-mail last night from her owner, who said that they are considering giving her a shot to slip the foal, as the mare will need all the calcium and strength she can get...without her body having to look after a growing foetus.
Embryo transfer...that wouldn't be very easy with minis...as it is pretty difficult to get in there, or would it? I know my vet won't even do an internal. Besides, I think she is under enough stress now, as it is.
The chains left unattatched are the ones you cross under the hitch, and attatch to the vehicle; and they are mandatory here as well. Even the brake line wouldn't have kept it out of the ditch, but she might have remembered to do the chains up, had she had to connect the brake line. Thing is, it is legal to not have the brake line on many small trailers...they have to be over a certain weight before it is necessary.

Yes C, it is. It is a very large bone to heal on a horse...and very likely she will end up with arthritis...but that can be handled and cared for "easily". Hopefully the signs that they are seeing are all good, and she will not have to be euthanised.

As per the "internal" exam to see if April is preggo, Lady is a registered 36"-er, so maybe she's bigger inside than most Minis. Anyhoo, I was concerned that maybe she'd been bred while at our friend's place last year ( when we went to Texas ). Turned out she is just FAT ( MY BAD! )! lol But she didn't mind being checked by the Vet. I just fed her mints while Dr. Bonnie was in there.

Mine is no Dr. Bonnie ...he is about 6'4", and doesn't dare take a chance. I have offered...but we aren't sure I would know exactly what I was feeling, or judge just how large a follicle I was feeling. pERHAPS THERE IS A vET WHERE aPRIL IS WHO WILL DO IT...SURELY THEY CAN'T ALL BE BIG GUYS AT THE vET COLLEGE. (SORRY, NOT YELLING...HIT THE CAPS)Darn-it...TWICE!)
They are thinking of just going ahead and giving her the shot. It won't hurt her if she is not in foal, and will do the job if she is.
