Ummm...question on colt

Jennifer tried to locate Gideon's berries while she was here. There is absolutely no sign of them. He wiggled around while she searched, so I thought that maybe she might have missed them. So later that day, I had my aunt look too. He stood absolutely still and there is absolutely NO sign of them.

He is a yearling, and I hear that they can suck back up and drop back down. But my aunt ended up asking me if it was possible for him to have been gelded in the past with none of us knowing. That raises an interesting question. Since he is an auction horse, what are the chances he was gelded? Now that I have been around him, I think he may have actually belonged to someone in the past, because he knows his stuff. He is very polite, trailers, ties, leads and allows me to pick up his feet. Doesn't sound much like a pasture horse with little handling.

If he was gelded, would a vet be able to tell?

Make him comfortable..scratchies, brushing..he will relax and let them down IF he has them..he might not even have them yet as a yearling..

gelding

Many yearlings don't have them down, from what I've read about minis. We have been lucky, so far, and ours have had 'em.

There is scar tissue there after gelding, yes, but I wouldn't think that an auction-yearling would have been gelded, and no-one mentioned it, as it would increase his value to many.

Certainly would to me, were I looking for a potential driving gelding...that he's already been done, and it paid for...for sure!

Thank you for your responses. I also thought that the chances of him being gelded were slim, but I was praying. HAHA.

Oh that little stinker began nipping yesterday. I can definatley tell he is beginning to feel at home. He walked right up, and let me pet his forehead some. Then he began sniffing my arm and the next thing I know...ouch! Zoey is doing much better with it, she will smell you and she begins to open her mouth but she rethinks it. Both are really good horses, they just have some not so good traits. Zoey is a handful, she is very aggressive towards eating, with pawing the ground non-stop. She also tries to plant her feet, so you can't pick them up. Gideon, you just barely touch his lower leg, and he lifts right up for you. Definately not a pasture horse without training.

When Zoey paws like that, are you witholding her feed until she stops doing it?

No, I haven't taken the food away. I never thought of it. But I shout "Quit!" and it gets her attention. Then if she starts threatening to kick at him, I yell "Quit!" and swat her behind. Nothing hard, just to let her know she is doing wrong. She'll stop until I leave, or he moves, which ever comes first.

I tried to seperate them, by putting their feed buckets at opposite sides of the feed shed, so they can't see each other. It usually happens when he pulls his bucket towards her, or one tries to check out the other's food. I fear she's gonna paw her way to China one of these days. It nearly gave me a heart attack the second day I had her. Here she's eating, and the next thing I know, she pulls her leg up where it literally is touching her stomach, and then she starts this pawing motion in the air towards her stomach. I instantly thought colic attack! But she only does it when she eats.
