Went haying last night

Got a call to go help last night, it was a day early, but that's alright.
We put away 500 bales for them. There was lots of prople there to help, old fashioned style...neighbours and friends. My brother even came along for the heck of it. Some minor technical difficulties with the elevator in the beginning, but it was fixed in no time.
It's been a while since we had the chance to get away out there to visit, they are like us, always have projects on the go.
I did see a nice big boy I only wish I could bring home though....but that wa one of those dreaming situations ...lol. Big ribbon winning cutting stallion, I haven't seen him since he was still with his mom. He sure was something else.
It was a great evening though, everyone was happy and having a good time, and after we all stopped for a visit and a beer.  The smell of fresh hay, friends and a cold one afterwards...how could it get any better that that?

Sounds like a good time and friends helping friends.

By trading the the beer for some Mikes Hard Lemonade...
IZZY

LOl...that's good stuff too
We went again last night and brought in another 250 bales, so we are all done till august because they are going to make round bales with the rest of this cut.
Went to visit the horses again, beautiful animals....but I still love comming home to my little sweeties, they are everything to me
They want to come see them, they are mini lovers too, they had some before they moved here.

Another good time, with a nice group visit afterwards. Met their new neighbours, they are nice people too with lots of stories to share.
Yea, this time they were feeling the beer a bit before we left,  it was hugs and hanshakes when we were leaving  They are so funny. I couldn't have anything to drink  being that I'm on antibiotics for a tooth I have to have pulled, which is a good thing I guess because Tony shouldn't have driven anyways.  Good people and good times

You are so lucky Izzy.... Enjoy all these people while you can.. All but two
of our neighbours have moved away or died that we used to do all these
things with.. I haven't gotten to know the new ones other than a passing
hello to some of them.. We were the second ones to move into this area
knew the people for miles around.. Now there are subdivisions with hundreds
of people and hardly know any of them.. Almost like city living...
Even our small Town of Tofield .. I use to know 3 out of four people in town
and now the town has grown up and I am lucky to know 1 out of 50 or
more..

I totlally hear you on that one...I feel the same way about this town.

They moved from a town that was the same way small when the got there and grew big time. They moved here to get away from that and get the "small town feeling" again. It'a a family farm where it's grandma, and grampa in one house and the kids and grand kids in the other...it just so happens that Coles teacher is one of them too.

Ditto Adie's advise. People don't get together like they used to do they. Sounds like a fun time was had by all

So Izzy how many bales can you keep in your barn? Did you guys build a barn w/loft [hiproof style] or a horse type? My husband and I when we first moved to Alberta had a small acerage with a quit smaller hiproof barn, maybe some day we will build another small barn like that. Right now we have enough building shelters and new fencing to keep up too. We just built a new shelter for our donkeys Hanna and Harvey and painted it barn red, so of course we now have a Chocolate jenny and a pinto jack with red smugged painted bums. We have not heard a word from them so they must love all the grass and their own home.

it's going to be a hip roof barn. that will be 14x16. I want to build a addition on the back wth a reg flat roof ( 10x14) for them to go under when the weather is too hot or stormy. On the inside there's going to be a couple of stalls. I'm not sure if I expalined that right, but I've seen that kind of addition on the hip roof barns before.
Next year we want to add another horse area with pasture and corrals and a bigger barn.
I was thinking the one we are working on now would be a great area for a mare and foal areaa because it's in the front yard an we would be able to watch them play from the picnic area.
We would like to go with plank fencing from now on, it looks better and is sturdier.
McBunz

We have page wire behind our plank fence .. keeps the foals in and the coyotes out..
IZZY

That's a good idea
The plank fence probably holds the wire straighter I bet. The horses have found that the page wire scratches mosquito bite just nicely. The wire is rounded out from scratching now...lol.
They have a little lean to that I put together till the barn is ready. We are going to be working on it this weekend.
Tony wanted to make sure that the beams were strong enough to hold up that much hay, so he's using 10"x 6" beams for the floor support. We are just waiting for two 14' 10x6's for the other ends.
Carlson

Right now we are using high tension wire 5 strands for most of the fences except for BeBe Gun our full size stallion he has six strands and a 2x6 plank alone the top. For our holding the mini's we are building a 2x6 plank pen -corral, we have not got any smaller pens and we are getting to old to chase. And besides it will serve as a good pen for when hooves and worming need to be done.

Well by the looks of things, you won't have to worry about catching
Son Of A Dun....he'll be trying to find a way to get into your house
He's such a cutie ?
IZZY

I was working on the barn plans last night. Tony thinks I only need 2 stalls and I'll be good to go. I Told him that we need at least 3. Coors needs his own, Dixie needs one big enough to foal in, and we need one for the weanling when that time comes. Tony said "well the baby is going to be sold, so we don't need another one....and we aren't getting any more in the future...right?"  Yea, I'll be breaking that one to him slowly....I probably looked like this      trying to hold that one in.....
It was originally only going to be Coors...and now there's Dixie....he didn't even see that one comming
Carlson

Don't worry he will change his mind when he sees the foal Izzy!
