In our storm on Thursday one of our pine trees was struck by lightening. Shook the house! 4 of my horses have a 3 sided run in shed that is accessible from 2 smaller pastures 1 of which is where the lightening struck. The tree is about 30 feet to the side of the run in shed. The horses were under the shed at the time. Now every time they walk through that gate they stop, stretch out those necks and smell the air before they will walk through the gate. I have to laugh everytime i see that but can sure understand why LOL.

Glad i moved them out of that pasture for the storm. It split off one slab of wood about 5 feet long & 3 or 4 inches thick and it stuck in the ground and there were several other smaller pieces and lots of bark. No wonder the poor horses are scared. The tree is oozing sap but is still standing.

That would be scary for them...Glad to hear they are all alright.
It's funny seeing them do that long neck check out thing when they are not sure though

We had a horriblely bad thunder storm too. It is really wierd our full size horses stand outside their shelter asses to the wind even when lighting. Our mini's go to their shelters. Who is the smarter horses?

Poor horses ... that would be enough to scare the poo out of them..Yrs. and yrs ago lighting struck a tree about half a mile away from me as I got out
of my car in the drive way.. I could feel my hair stand up on my neck..
imagine what the horses felt like that close.. they probably associate that
feeling with the smell of burn tree..

There was an old dead ( and ancient! ) Oak tree up by Lady's pasture. The dumb thing finally decided to fall over one night, away from her shed and into the woods, Thank God! She must've been sleeping in the shed, because the next morning she was acting nervous and didn't want to go into the shed to have her carrots & apples in her dish. I had to go put them out on "her rock" for her. It took her 5 days to decide it was okay to go back into the shed. Poor kid! I took her over to look at the tree right after her "breakfast" that morning, and she spent a long time looking it over and sniffing it, even nibbling on the bark. Guess she was making sure it was "dead".

Sher that is a funny story too. And some people call them "dumb" animals.
